Why I Started TheRampMan.NZ

There’s a simple reason I started making custom ramps differently.

I needed to understand access from the other side.

After developing Guillain-Barré Syndrome in 2024, I experienced first-hand how something as simple as getting through a doorway, over a lip or up a step can suddenly become a bloody big deal.

GBS is debilitating.

What frustrated me was seeing ramps that seemed designed to tick a box, rather than actually make life easier.

Too steep.
Too short.
Awkward transitions.
Hard edges.
Poor support.
Difficult for carers.
And often just plain ugly.

I kept thinking:

Surely we can do better than this?

So I started looking at ramps differently.

Not just as a piece of aluminium.

Not just a piece of rubber or plastic.

But as an access system.

How does the wheelchair approach it?

How does the person pushing handle the gradient?

What happens at the bottom?

Where does the load go?

What happens when it rains?

What happens when the surface isn’t flat?

What happens when the site is completely bloody awkward?

That’s where TheRampMan.NZ came from.

Built with care.
Fabricated with flair.
Installed with integrity.
Engineered with empathy.

Because I’ve actually been there.

And I understand that one little bump can make a massive difference.

So I wanted to flip the script.

Instead of asking:

“How do we make a ramp fit?”

I started asking:

“How do we make access easier?”

Eliminating one little bump can mean less jolting, less stress, less effort and more confidence.

It can make life safer.

It can make life easier.

It can make a difference to carers.

It can improve everyday Health & Safety.

And sometimes, it can be genuinely life-changing.

So if I can make getting in and out of somewhere a little easier, safer, and less frustrating for someone else…

That’s why I do it.

P.S. Then people started asking for ramps for forklifts, caravans, powerchairs, trucks, side-lifters, warehouses, garage dips, drainage channels, and all sorts of other weird and wonderful things.

🚨 NEED A METAL ACCESS RAMP ASAP?

Yep — we can usually help.

But here’s the deal…

These aren’t off-the-shelf ramps pulled from a warehouse shelf.

They’re custom-built for your site, which means materials need to be sourced, cutting may need to be outsourced, and then there’s the folding, drilling, countersinking, fabrication, finishing, and custom fitting.

💥 Can we make one urgently? Absolutely.

But:

🔩 Urgent cutting/fabrication can cost more.

🛠️ Folding, drilling, welding, countersinking, or other custom work can add time.

📅 Most urgent custom jobs still need 1–2 working days, depending on the fabrication queue and material availability.

🚚 If it needs to be freighted, allow another 1–2 days, depending on your location and the carrier.

As a general rule, give us around a week from quote approval to have your custom ramp fabricated and ready — sometimes quicker, sometimes a little longer depending on what’s involved.

Need it sooner?

Talk to me.

I’ll always see what I can do.

Just understand that rushing a custom-built ramp can mean rushing materials, fabrication and freight — and sometimes that costs a little more.

Because when it comes to access ramps:

Fast is good.
Right is better.

🛠️ Why The Ramp Man Exists?

Why TheRampMan.NZ Had to Happen

Let’s be real.

For years, the only viable option around Selwyn and Canterbury was KERBY™.

It was an aluminium extrusion. It was readily available. It was, at the time, probably the best ramp solution available.

But from around 2020 onwards, not much really changed.

And I started getting frustrated.

Because while KERBY™ solved a lot of problems, it didn’t always eliminate that bastard bump.

Especially with lowered cars like mine.

And particularly on hills, steep driveways, circular cul-de-sacs and awkward transitions — Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch’s Port Hills and everywhere in between.

Bottoming out isn’t fun.

Neither is needing someone to give you a push in a wheelchair.

So I started thinking:

Why are we still trying to make one standard extrusion solve every driveway?

Then the requests started coming.

“Can you help with my hill driveway entrance from the road and the dip into the garage over that drainage channel?”

“My lowered car scrapes when I’m coming out.”

“Mine scrapes when I’m coming in.”

“Can you do something for mobility access?”

Then it expanded.

ATVs. Bikes. Caravans. Motorhomes. Trailers. Boats. Hoists. Forklifts. Side-lifters. Warehouses. Gate sliders. Drainage channels. Garage dips.

Even fencing and other custom fabrication ideas started appearing.

It wasn’t just cars anymore.

It was everything that was needed to get from one level to another.

And I thought:

Bugger it.

Let’s stop trying to make one product fit everything.

Let’s build proper custom ramps.

About TheRampMan.NZ

So, TheRampMan.NZ was born in early 2025.

The idea was simple:

Look at the problem first. Build the ramp second.

We’re based in Rolleston, Canterbury, and work with experienced fabrication and engineering capabilities to turn those awkward access problems into properly considered solutions.

That means custom cutting, folding, drilling, welding, reinforcing, fixing, and fabrication — depending on what the job actually needs.

And because I’m a Graphic Designer by trade, I’ve spent my career thinking about how things work, how they look, and how people interact with them.

That might sound like an odd combination for a ramp builder.

It isn’t.

Good design is about solving problems.

And that’s exactly what custom ramp design is.

We work with 5052 aluminium plate, appropriate reinforcement, specialist fixings, and increasingly, recycled-rubber components where they make sense.

We’re also conscious of material use and waste.

Offcuts don’t automatically become rubbish — they’re opportunities for the next component, reinforcement, wedge, bracket or completely different idea.

That’s how you keep a custom product genuinely custom without throwing half the sheet in the bin.

And Then There’s the Personal Bit

A few years ago, I couldn’t even walk properly because of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

So when I talk about access, I’m not talking about something I’ve only read about.

I’ve experienced what a doorway, a lip, a step or a bloody awkward transition can feel like when your mobility changes.

That’s a big part of why TheRampMan.NZ has evolved beyond simply making wheelchair ramps, powerchair ramps, scooter-access ramps, and vehicle ramps.

I’m interested in making access easier.

For the person using it.

For the person pushing.

For the person driving.

For the operator loading equipment.

For the business, trying to make a workplace safer.

And for anyone who’s simply sick of scraping, jolting, bumping, struggling or saying:

“There has to be a better way.”

That’s where I come in.

Custom. Considered. Built Properly.

The new generation of TheRampMan.NZ systems isn’t about selling you the biggest piece of metal I can manufacture.

It’s about choosing the right combination of material, shape, reinforcement, fixing, and support for the actual job.

Sometimes that’s 8mm aluminium.

Sometimes it’s a lighter plate.

Sometimes it’s recycled rubber.

Sometimes it’s a hybrid.

Sometimes it’s a completely weird custom solution that I’ve never built before.

That’s the fun part.

Because your driveway, garage, warehouse, or access problem doesn’t need to be standard.

Neither does the ramp.

This isn’t just a business.

It’s personal.

It’s custom.

It’s considered.

It’s built with care.

And it’s designed to make life a bloody sight easier.

The Ramp Man's DIY Fixings Pack (CONCRETE SCREWS)

The Ramp Man’s DIY Installation Kit

TheRampMan’s DIY Fixings Pack contain one Torx Head Driver for our, 6.0 mm dimeter x +/- 50 mm or +/- 75 mm or +/- 105 mm long Countersunk CONCRETE SCREWS which will be supplied additionally with each order. Each pack has X5 Concrete Screws of one particular length suited to your situation, plus a proprietary drill bit driver, a concrete drill and more.

Great for security, these Torx six-pointed star-shaped pattern 6.0 mm diameter Countersunk (CSK), Concrete Screws are far superior to any other DIY masonry screws out there on the market like Ramset 14g (6.3 mm) Masonry Screws. These CSK Screws are 100% removable Concrete Screws (NOT masonry anchors), with superior clamping force when used close to the edge of the ramp (35 mm – 50 mm).

High corrosion resistance and perfect for use in concrete and asphalt!

These are the best of the best, and you cannot get these off the shelf at your local hardware store. They are a little bit more expensive, but they go the distance.

We also have another option if fixing on the roadside. These are slightly different but suited to both concrete and asphalt. They drive directly into the surface with a monster double thread. Same Torx head size, same diameter. I will quote what best suits your situation and supply details about it.

Easy Ramp Installation DIY

At your end, all you’ll need is a drill with a hammer function and a 5.5 mm Concrete Drill to suit your drill. Easy as!

Pop the ramp down, mark the holes with your drill bit through the ramp holes, move the ramp away and drill the concrete holes 30 mm deeper than the length of the concrete screw, blow the dust out, put the ramp back, screw the Concrete Screws in firm, and voila!

Set and forget, and get your sanity back again!

The Ramp Man's Big Hairy Questions Answered

BIG QUESTIONS ABOUT RAMPS & WHERE & HOW THEY ARE INSTALLED?

Here are the FAQs from real Kiwis like you…

🏛️ Are the ramps council-compliant?

Yes, absolutely.

Unlike those dodgy rubber ramps that block water and flip up into the street (or worse, the sweeper), TheRampMan’s ramps are fully council-compliant.

No tripping hazards. No water pooling. No fines.

One road sweeper even jumped out of his truck, shook my hand and said:

“I love these. I want one for my own driveway. I’m forever kicking away loose rubber mats and bits of wood that get sucked up into my sweeper.”

✅ Real-world proof. Built to last. Council and common sense approved.

💧 Does water still flow through underneath?

Yes — and leaves too.

There’s a clear channel underneath every ramp so water can flow freely and debris won’t get stuck.

No blockages. No flooding. No stress.

🌀 Can you build a curved ramp for a cul-de-sac or corner?

You bet.

Thanks to my ridgy-didgy laser cutter, I can create precision-cut custom ramps to suit any shape — curved, angled, or tricky driveways.

Just send through a few pics and basic measurements.

Want to see a beauty in action?

Check out the 6m wide curved ramp installed at Christchurch Airport for a car hire company.

📍 11 Illinois Drive, Christchurch

It’s built to handle serious traffic — and it looks mint.

(See the top image on this site!).

🔧 Do you install the ramp too?

Yes, I sure do — across Canterbury and beyond.

For locals, I handle everything from measure-up to full install.

Outside of Christchurch? I can fly up to Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga or drive down to Timaru, Dunedin or Queenstown if needed — just allow for travel costs.

If it lines up with a weekend or a visit to mates on the North Shore or in Flat Bush, I can often work it in. Let’s have a yarn and make it happen. I am currently working on an installer for each region… watch this space.

Ever Wondered if There Was Something Even Better Than KERBY™? This is It.

Welcome to the next evolution in driveway access: the Selwyn Semi-Height Ramp. Precision engineered, ultra-smooth, folded flat top for excellent, strong mounting and strength, and built to outlast every driveway drama Selwyn can throw at it.

Tired of flappy tin ramps, the whimpy West Melton folded metal ramps, the rusty old saggy steel DIY jobs, ye ol’ flag poles, the random rubber ramps that the road sweeper eats for breakfast, or the sad old four by two back yard job, but mainly, done with your car scraping on the way in or out, this is your forever fix.

If you live in Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, West Melton, Kirwee, Leeston, Tai Tapu, Burnham, Templeton, Springston, Dunsandel, or Southbridge and you’ve been dealing with a dodgy ramp or no ramp at all, it’s time to upgrade to the next level.

The Ramp Evolution is here: From Scraaaape & Bang-Bang to 99% Smooth Transitional Luxury

You’ve seen the old-school ramps — thin, folded metal that fail, rust and sag, fixed with whatever bolts someone had in their ute tray. They rust, they sag, they rattle, they trap water, they build gardens, and eventually they pancake. No, no, no! Perish the thought.

Then came KERBY™. A revolution in council-compliant, super heavy-duty, 6mm aluminium extrusion ramps. Built in Selwyn. Installed properly. Loved by thousands.

Now? We go next level.

Bye-Bye Bang-Bang & Wallet-Pain, Hello Smooth Sailing & Sanity on Every Drive!
